BEF raises over $78,000 at annual gala

galagroupOn Aug. 26, the Belton Educational Foundation hosted its annual Back-to-School Gala and Auction at Loch Lloyd Country Club in Belton. Over 180 guests attended the event, helping to raise over $78,000 in support of its mission to enrich educational opportunities of every student attending the Belton School District through new and innovative programs, nutritional assistance and teacher development.

Foundation Board President, Jacqueline Cook, welcomed guests and honored Board Member Emeritus, Dodie Maurer, who passed away earlier this year. Other speakers included Executive Director, Krista Watkins, Hillcrest STEAM Academy Library Media Specialist and Foundation grant recipient, Tanya Appling, and past Excellence in Teaching Award recipient, Mill Creek Upper Elementary teacher, Jill Beck. Guests also viewed a moving video submitted by Belton High School graduate and Foundation scholarship recipient, Shannon Coupland, who shared how the Foundation helped set her post-graduate educational dreams in motion.

Belton School District Superintendent, Dr. Andrew Underwood then presented Gladden Elementary fourth grade teacher, Ashleigh Wooldridge, with the 2016-17 Jon S. Ferguson Excellence in Teaching Award, for which she will receive a $2,500 classroom grant.

The night concluded with a live auction, presented by Robert Mayo of Mayo Auctions and live music by Garry Lincoln.
